Pre-construction Administrator, Fern Hume, visited her old school this week when she went back to Soham Village College to talk to pupils about careers in construction, and challenge current perceptions of the industry.
Fern began her talk explaining what the built environment is and how everything around you has been constructed and the role Kier plays in this. She then talked about how the industry is changing, how more females are taking up careers in construction and the variety of roles that now exist – going far beyond the traditional idea of the industry being made up of manual labour roles.
Fern shared her progression after finishing school, through several careers before she found herself in the construction industry and how she is currently studying a construction related business degree. Fern finished her talk with details of the many possible paths into construction – from apprenticeships, including digital apprenticeships, to degree and graduate programmes.
