Chelmsford City Council together with Kier Construction Eastern marked a significant milestone in the build of the new Riverside Ice and Leisure complex in Chelmsford, with all major structural work complete. Councillors, Designers and the Kier Construction Eastern team will be in attendance.

The new leisure centre will house a main 25m x 10 lane swimming pool with moveable floors, a boom to sub-divide the pool as required and capacity for 300 spectators. Two pools, one for teaching and a fun pool where an associated flume ride will be provided.

With the structure of the complex now in place, internal fittings are now underway. On Thursday 11 October at noon, a tile was placed on the wall of the swimming pool by Councillor Julia Jeapes, Cabinet Member for Leisure, and Ian Gifford, Operations Director, to mark the occasion.

The new complex will also boast health and fitness studios, a 120-station gym, a soft play area and crèche, changing rooms and a more spacious river frontage café/restaurant. All the facilities are being designed to ensure easy access for people with disabilities.

Key features of the design include a spacious and welcoming reception foyer, new ice rink support accommodation and innovative first floor walkways which will link the new building to the existing sports hall and ice rink. The ice rink and hall are being refurbished to create a modern, airy and exciting new experience for customers.

Accompanied by improvements to the leafy cycleways and footpaths nearby, the building will provide greater connection to the new Bond Street development and the surrounding area, with retail and a café/restaurant both accessible to centre customers and non-users.

Councillor Julia Jeapes, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “I have been excited about our fantastic new flagship leisure centre ever since I saw the designs in August 2016. Work is going very well and now that the structure is springing up, you can really imagine how it will look when it is complete, packed with swimmers and other users enjoying their activities. I can’t wait for the new Riverside to open for everyone to enjoy next year.”

Ian Gifford, Operations Director for Kier Construction Eastern, comments: “We are delighted to be working collaboratively with Chelmsford City Council to deliver this exciting complex project. The new Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre will provide fantastic amenities for the local community.”
