On the 16 November Ongar Academy was officially opened by former Astronaut, Michael Foale CBE. Michael is a veteran of six space missions, and was the first Briton to perform a space walk. Until 17 April 2008, he held the record for most time spent in space by a US citizen: 374 days, 11 hours, 19 minutes. In attendance was Ongar Academy Trust Founding Members, local councillors, teaching staff, students, representatives from Kier, EFSA, Mace, Conisbee Structural Engineers, Bond Bryan Architects and Moulsham Academy Trust. Speeches were delivered by the school’s Head Teacher, David Grant, Chair of Governors, Blane Judd,
Founding Member, Jeff Banks and VIP Michael Foale. before guests were given the opportunity to tour the school.
The Ongar Academy will serve the needs of the local community by providing mixed education in a 4FE configuration for 11-19 year olds. There will be 600 11-16 students with a 200 place Sixth Form. The site is adjacent to the Ongar Leisure Centre located off Fyfield Road, Ongar. The Academy will deliver a broad and balanced curriculum, with a focus on Academic Achievement; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects (STEM); and Building Communities.
